Since the arrival in 2007 of its new Director Peter de Caluwe and new Director of Communication Christian Longchamp, the prestigious Opéra de la Monnaie in Brussels has undergone some striking changes. In 2006, we won the competition to redesign the identity of La Monnaie, the national opera of Belgium. The goal of this new identity was to create a more contemporary look and feel, and to attract a younger audience while maintaining their traditional patrons. La Monnaie asked that we keep the existing logo, and refresh the identity around it. So we focused on imagery, type, and layout.

One of the key elements in the new identity is the photography. For every opera performed we are given a theme, which we then translate into imagery, using existing images by well-known artists. These feature prominently in posters, appearing in the streets throughout Brussels, and have included photographs by Guido Mocafico, Hedi Slimane, Erwan Frotin, and Sam Taylor Wood. Our annual program, or the 2008-09 season includes many images by renowned artist Anish Kapoor. In addition to these posters, the identity encompasses brochures, seasonal programs and posters.
