For the First Time Ever: A Biennial in Brussels
On October 19th, Brussels will inaugurate its first contemporary art biennial. Included will be contributions from more than 40 international artists, and exhibitions by contemporary art institutions such as B.P.S.22, BOZAR, MuHKA, and Van Abbemuseum.
This first edition of the Brussels Biennial is the result of a collaboration that crosses boundaries between various biennials, exhibitions, institutions, curators, and artists. Its aim is to move radically away from the process in which artworks are typically produced, presented, disseminated, and contextualized.
Barbara Vanderlinden, Brussels Biennial Art Director and author and lecturer on exhibitions and museum studies at San Francisco Art Institute, liked the work we did for SFAI, and asked us to design the identity of the Brussels Biennial. Included are the logo, stationery, posters, press folders, billboards, way finding and signage.
We used a flag as the main element and logo, as it represents a landmark, kind of like the first astronaut to plant a flag on the moon. Actual flags will be rooted near every building around town that is participating in the biennial, so that the event will be visible to all and a portray an important step in the process of integrating the Capital of Europe in the international contemporary art scene.
We’re also designing the catalogue for the biennial, which will be available in January 2009. The catalogue will be created throughout the biennial by the artists, gallery owners, visitors, and exhibitors, in a way similar to how a blog is built, with each contributor’s comments.
