Things We Like: Life Defined By Forms
Chanel Mobile Art has arrived at the third destination of its six-city tour: New York City. While overtly promotional, what makes Karl Lagerfeld’s concept unique is that this Chanel Contemporary Art Container is a traveling museum. We were pleased to visit Chanel Mobil Art, Zaha Hadid’s latest architectural exploration, installed in the heart of Central Park. It’s impressive how the structure’s futuristic organic forms interact with this natural environment.
The visitor is audio-guided through the amazing space, which is decorated with installations created by an international array of contemporary artists, including Nobuyoshi Araki, Sylvie Fleury, Daniel Buren, Wim Delvoye, Loris Cecchini, and Lee Bul. Walking through the exhibition space, guided by this gravely voice, is a pleasant individual experience without external distraction.
Lagerfeld has orchestrated the integration of his main creative interests—fashion, art, and architecture—by putting the spotlight on Chanel’s iconic 2.55 quilted handbag. The artists present their unique visions and unexpected interpretations of the elements that give the bag its identity.
The journey through forms finishes happily, with Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree. Yoko promises that each wish written and hung on the tree will soon become reality…
