The First Brussels Biennale Opens Today!
Fifty years to the day from the closing of the 1958 World’s Fair, which saw a surge of development and modernization in Brussels, the first-ever Brussels Biennale of contemporary art opens. The biennale is being staged in two primary locations, the former Post Sorting Center at the Brussels-Sud station, and the Anneessens premetro station, designed by Maxime Brunfaut, the renowned Belgian architect responsible for the Brussels-Central station, and the grandfather of Base’s Thierry Brunfaut. Brussels-Central station and the National Bank of Belgium provide additional venues for exhibition space.
The theme of the exhibition is “linked to the complex ideas emerging from the different modern complexities in a global context and its implications on individuals and societies from around the world. The project will start from the active involvement of artists within this new global modern reality.” In the 11 weeks that the biennale is happening, parallel events will be staged at museums and galleries and cultural institutions around the city.
The Brussels Biennale is open through January 4, 2009.
