This is the question we’ve asked in our work with Actions Birmanie, a volunteer organization fighting for human rights and democracy in Burma. Based in Brussels, Actions Birmanie lobbies the European Union and Belgian government to put political and economic pressure on the Burmese government, a dictatorship that has been accused by the United Nations of crimes against humanity. One of the primary causes of Actions Birmanie is Aung San Suu Kyi.

If you, like many people, are asking yourself, “Who is Aung San Suu Kyi?” then keep reading.

Ms. Suu Kyi was elected as Burma’s Prime Minister in 1990. Subsequently she was placed under house arrest by the military junta and denied her right to assume the position. She has remained imprisoned for roughly 13 of the years since. For her nonviolent struggle for human rights, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. She remains imprisoned today.

It’s a heartbreaking saga that too few are familiar with. Working with Actions Birmanie to publicize Suu Kyi’s cause, we played on the international public’s general lack of familiarity with Suu Kyi. We ask a series of questions that present the contradictory nature of Suu Kyi’s situation—that she is being wrongly imprisoned by her own country, which elected her as its Prime Minister nearly 20 years ago. These questions serve to publicize Suu Kyi’s story, and in a way answer themselves. Our work for the campaign runs through a press release and posters, which are being sold to benefit Suu Kyi’s cause.
