Sorry to bother you. You’re probably working. Or pretending like you’re working. Anyhow, we just wanted to let you know about our new website. If you’re curious, the address is basedesign.com. We’re excited about it so we made this little flashing message thing to put some light pressure on you to get there. We hope you like it. (The website, not the pressure.)
We’ve been working on our new website for months and are all really proud of it. We know it’s summertime and you’ve probably got lots of plans, … more
In 2006 we designed the identity and packaging and image campaign to launch sexy start-up Kiki de Montparnasse. Since then this one-off store in Manhattan’s Soho has grown into a full-fledged brand with stores in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, partnerships with various luxury and boutique hotels, and representation in several multi-brand department stores, including Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, and Selfridges. … more
Last year BaseLab was contacted by Montreal-based ad agency Sid Lee to modify a sans-serif typeface for STM (Societé de Transport de Montréal), the transit authority of the city of Montreal. But Joanca at BaseLab thought a custom typeface would better fit their needs—primarily signage, posters, and advertising. And after seeing the preliminary sketches, Sid Lee and STM agreed.
The finished font was unveiled recently and is now doing its thing throughout Montreal. Used mainly in uppercase for a bold presence, the STM Montreal typeface is, as BaseLab says, “designed like a comfortable subway commuter—with plenty of spacing. It’s a human and friendly sans-serif, with rounded corners for a smoother ride.” … more
In this video, Pat Berman, Professor of Art at Wellesley College, looks at the “W” logo that our Base Lab team created for the school. Suffice it to say that her analysis is astonishing. It is insightful, intelligent and inspired in a way that reminds each of us of “that great teacher we once had.” A must see for everyone interested in typography.

Typodarium gives us daily typographic inspiration via a tear-off calendar that features a different typeface for each day of the year. The 2010 calendar will showcase three fonts by our own BaseLab: STM Montreal (May31), Cinematek ( June 10), and Words, the typeface designed for Base’s writers (October 2). The 2009 calendar sold out in nothing flat, so get your 2010 edition before it’s too late.
… more
