With a degree from NYU and four years’ experience in real estate development, Kristen Wentrcek started Wintercheck Factory in June 2009, in Brooklyn, with the idea of creating accessible, cost-effective design produced in the U.S. You are maybe wondering why the name “Wintercheck” Factory? In fact, the name is derived from her own last name, Wentrcek, and an official attempt to have her name finally pronounced correctly.

For this week’s interview, we decided to keep it local, and talk with Jamie Gray, the man behind Matter, the high-end furniture and design store right around the corner from Base’s New York office. More than just the proprietor of Matter, Jamie is also involved in the design of the store’s own furniture line, Matter Made. With an eye peeled for a bigger Manhattan space, Jamie took time out of his increasingly busy schedule to answer a few of our questions about how he got where he is today, and how he’s going to get where he wants to be tomorrow.

Graanmarkt 13, a new and unique retail store in Antwerp, opened Saturday. Located in a residential building and neighborhood on the city’s tree-lined market square, Graanmarkt 13 is a store conceived as a home. In fact, it is a home. Proprietors Ilse Cornelissens and Tim Van Geloven live on the top floor of this stately, renovated row house.
