Death Sentence: Panda!’s latest release entitled Spectral Arms
Death Sentence: Panda! It’s an appropriately provocative and exclamatory name for these three diminutive monsters of rock from San Francisco. Flying in the face of today’s grandiose, guitar-driven Rock Bands, Death Sentence: Panda! does more with less. On paper, their band-geek lineup is flute, clarinet, and drums; what you hear is a savage, unholy racket of otherworldly zounds. Paul Cousturos’s clarinet, apart from the occasional telltale woody egginess, sounds nothing like a clarinet. He runs it—and any of several snake-charmer reed instruments—through a pedal or combination of pedals that warps it like a voice filter does to a silhouetted interviewee who would like to remain anonymous. His simple lines are contorted into skittering, streaky smears and menacing underwater rumbles, often so low and murky … more
Matthew Didemus and Jeremy Greenspan (right) of Junior Boys
Steve Rogenstein, Director of the Base studio in New York, periodically throws underground dj gigs in his Brooklyn loft. On July 10, he had the privilege of hosting Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys, a two-year dream come true.

Christian Longchamp
Base spoke with Christian Longchamp, director of communication at la Monnaie, the national opera of Belgium, located in the heart of Brussels. Christian Longchamp came to Brussels three years ago to join the team under Peter de Caluwe, the then-recently appointed director of La Monnaie who at that time was looking for a right-hand man with an adventurous vision. Christian Longchamp seems to have been an obvious choice. His Swiss roots and a 15-year residence in Paris, where he worked for various renown institutions including the Louvre, have given him the flair of a world citizen: confidence tempered with humility, classy urban sensibility, and a deeply entrenched affiliation with various forms of art.
In tandem with Peter de Caluwe, Christian Longchamp has enlivened la Monnaie and its artistic programme, and accordingly renewed its communication language in cooperation with Base. Base has now entered its fourth season as la Monnaie’s graphic design and art direction partner, and it has been a wonderful journey so far, with a new website as the icing on the cake.

Sanaz Azari
First-time filmmaker Sanaz Azari was just awarded the Grand Prix du Public at the 2010 Festival International de Cinema de Nyon for her documentary Salaam Isfahan. Conceived as a personal investigation into Sanaz’s own relationship with Iran, where she was born, Salaam Isfahan was shot, coincidentally, during the fraught Iranian elections of 2009. As the movie progresses, the events surrounding the election inevitably creep in, and a secondary story emerges. Sanaz took a few minutes to tell us about the movie she set out to make, the movie she ended up making, and the movie she’s planning to make next.
