Pantone is looking to reach out to consumers outside the design world. Hence the first Pantone Hotel, which opened yesterday in Brussels’ stylish Avenue Louise area. The hotel invites visitors to experience the city of Brussels through a “lens of color and a spectrum of comforts.” Each of the hotel’s 59 rooms, designed by interior designer Michel Penneman and architect Oliver Hannaert, is inspired by different Pantone color palettes. Guests can choose their room at check-in based on their mood. Base has designed the logo and identity for the hotel based on Pantone’s classic chip logo.

The last couple of months have been busy ones for Pantone and Base. We’ve been working together on several projects. Most visible has been the packaging and promotional materials for Pantone’s new Plus Series, which launched on May 10. As part of our work on the Plus Series, we at Base worked with the good folks at Cool Hunting on a short film about Pantone. We’ve also been working with Pantone’s Fashion + Home division on its annual print campaign and a short video. And last but not least, April 12 saw the soft launch of the Pantone Hotel, for which we provided the logo and identity concepts. … more
On May 10 Pantone launched The Plus Series, the next generation of the classic Pantone Matching System. The Plus Series adds 566 new colors—224 new solid colors, 300 premium metallics, and 42 new neons—but fear not, printers: all Plus Series colors remain based on the existing 14 basic color inks of the Pantone Matching System. That means there’s nothing new to learn, and no new equipment necessary. Based on Pantone’s market research, The Plus Series has been redesigned with a chromatic flow (colors keep their same names and numbers; an index makes it easy to find them in the chromatic sequence), and also includes new digital tools and software to update design programs easily.

Launching today is Pantone’s new Plus Series, the next generation of the classic Pantone Matching System. To celebrate the release, we worked with film director Greg Mitnick and producer and editor of Cool Hunting Ami Kealoha to create a film that gives a behind-the-scenes look into Pantone. With contributions from Pantone insiders as well as leading lights of the design community—John Maeda, Doug Jaeger, and Tina Roth Eisenberg of swissmiss—the four-and-a-half-minute film gives insight into the development of the new series, and highlights Pantone’s central importance in the world of design. … more

It’s hard to believe, but there may be a silver lining to this recession: it’s forcing people to be more efficient. While it may feel like a diet at gunpoint, companies are being forced to do more with less, and faster. … more
